SOS Mangrove Programme

Establish in 2020 to carry baseline studies, educate communities and contribute to mangrove restoration in Mauritius

Underscoring our commitment to address environmental challenges in Mauritius, the AfrAsia Foundation donated about MUR 1.3m to fund the various activities and scientific materials required for the long-term monitoring and educational SOS Mangrove Programme. In collaboration with the NGO Reef Conservation, our aim is to help restore mangrove forests which presently cover approximately 181 hectares in Mauritius and are a critical component of the environmental ecosystem. In the past, the overall coverage area for these forests were estimated at 2000 hectares, clearly indicating an urgency for action, which was further accentuated by the Wakashio Oil Spill in August 2020.

  • Our Achievements
      • 12 mangrove visual surveys at 15 sites were completed from August 2020 to June 2022 along the South-Eastern coast of Mauritius.
      • 24 Permanent plots were set up at 3 baseline sites: Domaine les Paletuviers, Melville Barachois and Ferney.
      • More than 1000 community members reached through ‘Bis lamer’ & ‘eco-school’ sessions around Mauritius.
